10:30 PM (AEST) Sunday, August 13 at White Hart Lane, London
The opening weekend of the English Premier League continues on Sunday when the best defensive side of last season Tottenham host newly promoted Newcastle.
Tottenham: Lloris; Dier, Vertonghenm, Alderweireld, Davies; Dembele, Winks; Sissoko, Dele, Eriksen; Kane.
Newcastle United: Elliott; Manquillo, Lejeune, Clark, Dummett; Ritchie, Hayden, Shelvey, Atsu; Perez; Mitrovic.
142 Premier League games have been played between these two sides with Tottenham winning 60 games to Newcastle’s 52 wins, while 30 games have been drawn. Their last clash was in the 2015/16 season where Newcastle emphatically won 5-1.
Tottenham were very impressive last season, losing just 4 games, less than any other side while also conceding less goals than any other side. They were the only team all season that were close to eventual champions Chelsea. They’ll come into this match with essentially the same side. They’ll be planning to continue their defensive dominance this season while improving on their attack so as to go one better than last season.
Newcastle United spent last season in the second division after getting relegated at the end of the 2015/16 season. Newcastle were a class above their competition last year ending the season at the top of the ladder, which earnt them an automatic promotion back into the Premier League. They’re expected to be able to match it with most of the Premier League sides this season.
Newcastle Attack v Spurs Defence – The Spurs defence is impeccable and is going to prove to be an immense hurdle for the newly promoted Newcastle United to overcome here.
Spurs are expected to be too good here, however Newcastle are not an entire write off.
