4:30 PM (AEDST) Thursday, December 14 at the WACA, Perth
The third test of the Ashes series between Australia and England will take place in Perth, where a win for Australia will wrap up the series.
Australia: Cameron Bancroft, David Warner, Usman Khawaja, Steve Smith, Mitchell Marsh, Shaun Marsh, Tim Paine, Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, Nathan Lyon, Josh Hazlewood.
England: Alastair Cook, Mark Stoneman, James Vince, Joe Root, Dawid Malan, Moeen Ali, Jonny Bairstow, Chris Woakes, Craig Overton, Stuart Broad, James Anderson.
These two sides have met in 343 prior Tests, with Australia winning 142 Tests to England’s 108, while 93 have been drawn. On Australian soil there have been 177 Tests with Australia winning 93 to England’s 57 with 27 drawn. Australia won all of the last 6 Tests on home soil, however the last series in England was won by the home team. Australia has won both Tests in this series so far.
Aside from a dominant series win against Pakistan, last season was a horror one for Australia, which saw them lose all 3 Tests against Sri Lanka and the opening 2 Tests against South Africa. Australia won the dead rubber prior to the series win over Pakistan. They then won the opening test against India, before losing 2 of the last three, with the other game drawn, producing another lost series in the sub-continent. Australia then suffered a humiliating first test loss to Bangladesh, their first ever against Bangladesh. They won the second and their most recent Test. Australia had a steady start to this series before cantering away on day 5 to win by a commanding 10 wickets. Australia then hit back after a poor second innings with the bat to win the second test by 120 runs.
England ended last season poorly, also dropping a test to Bangladesh before losing the last 4 Tests against India. They began this season is vastly improved fashion, beating South Africa 3-1 and then the West Indies 2-1, with both series played on home soil. 27 of their last 44 Tests have been on home soil though. England showed plenty of grit in their first innings of this series, but their bowlers failed to take a wicket in the fourth innings, handing Australia an easy win in the end. England again failed in the fourth innings of the last test to lose a very winnable match.
Third and fourth innings – Australia has been shaky in this area in both Tests but bounced back in the fourth on both times to win comfortably in the end. England need to lift big time in the last innings of the match.
England haven’t won a series in Australia after losing the first test since 1979. Australia won after a big scare in the second Test. England are looking mentally broken. Big ask for them to win in Perth.
