12:45 PM (AEST) Sunday, September 24 at Ballarat Turf Club, Miners Rest
A pair of feature races will headline the day when horse racing makes its return to the rural Victorian township of Ballarat on Thursday.
Race 1 – Craigs Royal Hotel 3YO Maiden Plate (1400 metres)
Race 2 – Mortimer Petroleum Maiden Plate (1400 metres)
Race 3 – City Of Ballarat Maiden Plate (1200 metres)
Race 4 – Porter Plant F&M Benchmark 70 Handicap (1200 metres)
Race 5 – The Hotham (1200 metres)
Race 6 – The Melbourne Cup Carnival Country Series Heat 2 (1600 metres)
Race 7 – Hygain Winners Choice Class 1 Handicap (1400 metres)
Race 8 – Sportsbet Power Play Benchmark 70 Handicap (2000 metres)
Race 9 – Hygain Winner Choice Benchmark 64 Handicap (1200 metres)
Race 5 – The Hotham – This first of the two main races will see $50,000 in prize money on the line, making this the most lucrative maiden race in Victoria. Woohoo will start as the favourite here having finished within, or just outside the features in all of her last five starts. Ran fifth last out in wet conditions, but is expected to be much stronger here in ideal racing conditions. My Giddy Aunt has managed to feature in 10 of her 18 race starts, picking up 3 second places and seven thirds. Is capable of winning this race. Woodbine Miss will be resuming here which works in her favour, as does the firm track. Brother Adam will have the rails run here and is a slim place chance here. He’s had 18 races to date but has yet to feature. This could be his chance to break that record.
Betting: Woohoo $3.40; Sergeant Sam $4.80; The Black Isle $4.80; My Giddy Aunt $4.80; Woodbine Miss $6.50; Bellwhist $7.00; Lechter $9.00; Brother Adam $13.00; Bashirah $19.00; Costano Mille $19.00.
