The Australian Wallabies continue their spring tour of Great Britain with a test against Scotland at Murrayfield on Sunday morning.

History

There have been 29 tests played between these two nations with Australia holding a clear advantage having won 20 compared to Scotland’s 9 victories. Australia has won the last two games against Scotland, with the last game resulting in an entertaining yet narrow 35-34 Wallabies win in the World Cup last year. Scotland last beat Australia in 2012 and 2009. Prior to those wins, Australia had won 16 straight games, from 1982 til 2006.

Form

Australia has had a rough time on the international Rugby Union stage in the last 12 months, winning just 4 of their 12 games since the World Cup Final last year. Half of those losses have been against the All Blacks, while they also lost all three tests against England in June. They beat South Africa in Brisbane and Argentina in Perth before losing to the Springboks in Pretoria last month. They beat Argentina in London a week later before succumbing to a fast finishing All-Blacks side a month ago. The Wallabies began their Spring Tour in strong fashion, belting Wales 32-8 last weekend.

Scotland have struggled in 2016 losing to England and Wales at the start of the year before beating Italy 36-20 in the Six Nations. They then managed to beat France 29-18 in arguably their best performance for some time. A week later they lost narrowly to Ireland before travelling to Japan where they had to work hard to overcome Japan in both Tests.

Key Match-Up

Greig Laidlaw v Will Genia – The Wallabies have rushed Genia back into the side after originally missing selection. How he prepares on such short notice will determine how well Australia performs. Laidlaw is expected to have the upper hand over his counterpart, but Genia can out perform him.

Verdict

Australia are favourites, but not overwhelming ones. This Scottish rugby union side is a determined one, while the Australian side is more of a flashy outfit. If the game gets into a grind, Scotland could very well win.
