The Semi Finals at the Australian Open get underway on Thursday with the fairytale runs of Kenny Edmund and Elise Mertens continuing.
 

Marin Cilic [6] v Kyle Edmund

Marin Cilic had a tougher opening match than he would’ve anticipated, against Canadian qualifier Vasek Pospisil, dropping the third set and winning the fourth in a tie break, winning the match 6-2, 6-2, 4-6, 7-6. Cilic then toppled Joao Sousa in the second round 6-1, 7-5, 6-2. The third round saw Cilic work hard to defeat American Ryan Harrison 7-6, 6-3, 7-6. The fourth round saw Cilic beat tenth seed Pablo Carreno Busta in a tough battle 6-7, 6-3, 7-6, 7-6. He came up against top seed Rafael Nadal in the quarters and took the match into a fifth set when Nadal retired with the score at 3-6, 6-3, 6-7, 6-2, 2-0.
 
Young Briton Edmund has had a great tournament so far, performing better than his ranking of 49 suggests. In the opening round he beat 11th seed South African Kevin Anderson in 5 sets, 6-7, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. In the second round he took out Denis Istomin in straight sets 6-2, 6-2, 6-4. Edmund had another 5 setter in the third round against Nikoloz Basilashvili, eventually prevailing 7-6, 3-6, 4-6, 6-0, 7-5. Edmund’s impressive run continued in the fourth round when he toppled Andreas Seppi 6-7, 7-5, 6-2, 6-3. He was very impressive yet again in the quarter final as he beat third seed Grigor Dimitrov 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Caroline Wozniacki [2] v Elise Mertens

Second seed Wozniacki has been impressive as she has made her way to the semi final. She opened with a steady Round 1 win 6-2, 6-3 over top 50 player Mihaela Buzarnescu. In Round 2 she was pushed to the distance by young Croatian Jana Fett, but eventually won 3-6, 6-2, 7-5. Wozniacki then made light work of 30th seed Kiki Bertens 6-4, 6-3. She was even more dominant in the fourth round against 19th seed Magdalena Rybarikova, dropping just 3 games to win 6-3, 6-0. In the quarters she waspushed to a third set against Carla Suarez Navarro before winning 6-0, 6-7, 6-2.
 
World number 37, 22 year old Elise Mertens started her campaign here with a swift 6-2, 6-1 win over qualifier Viktoria Kuzmova. She then beat Australian 23rd seed Daria Gavrilova 7-5, 6-3 in a tough battle in the second round. Mertens then beat Alize Cornet in straight sets, however it was a long and tough battle, lasting 2 hours. Mertens won 7-5, 6-4. In the fourth round Mertens again had another 2 hour clash, this time against Petra Martic, coming home with a 7-6, 7-5 win. Mertens than hammered fourth seed Elina Svitolina in the quarter final 6-4, 6-0.
