The Final of the men’s draw at the Australian Open will take place this Sunday night, with legendary Roger Federer chasing his 20th Grand Slam win.
The legendary Roger Federer began his Australian Open campaign with a dominant display against Aljaz Bedene, cruiging to a 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 win. He again won in straight sets in his second round clash with German Jan Lennard Struff 6-4, 6-4, 7-6. Federer then took 2 hours to beat 29th seed Richard Gasquet in straight sets 6-2, 7-5, 6-4. In the round of 16, Federer continued his run of undefeated sets with a 6-4, 7-6, 6-2 win over Marton Fucsovics. He continued his dominant campaign in the quarter final, beating 19th seed Tomas Berdych in straight sets 7-6, 6-3, 6-4. In the semi final, Federer came up against Hyeon Chung, who retired due to a foot injury late in the second set, with Federer in front 6-1, 5-2.
Marin Cilic had a tougher opening match than he would’ve anticipated, against Canadian qualifier Vasek Pospisil, dropping the third set and winning the fourth in a tie break, winning the match 6-2, 6-2, 4-6, 7-6. Cilic then toppled Joao Sousa in the second round 6-1, 7-5, 6-2. The third round saw Cilic work hard to defeat American Ryan Harrison 7-6, 6-3, 7-6. The fourth round saw Cilic beat tenth seed Pablo Carreno Busta in a tough battle 6-7, 6-3, 7-6, 7-6. Cilic then came up against top seed Rafael Nadal with the match reaching a fifth set before Nadal retired after having his serve broken early in the last. Cilic was leading 3-6, 6-3, 6-7, 6-2, 2-0 at the time. Cilic then steam rolled impressive British underdog Kyle Edmund 6-2, 7-6, 6-2 to reach the final.
