US Open – Ladies Final

6:00 AM (AEST) Sunday, September 10 at Flushing Meadows, New York City

An all-American final of the ladies tennis draw at the US Open will take place on Sunday between Sloane Stephens and Madison Keys.

Madison Keys [15] v Sloane Stephens

Keys reached a career high of rank of 7th in October last year before slowly drifting out to a ranking of 21 by the end of July. She then clawed back five spots leading into the US Open and a win here could see her close in on the top 10 once again. The fifteenth seeded Keys has had a lot of tough opposition in her road to the quarters. She beat Mertens 6-3, 7-6 in the first round and Maria 6-3, 6-4 in the second round. She then came up against 17th seed Elena Vesnina, who took the first set but was overpowered by Keys, who won 2-6, 6-4, 6-1. Keys then beat the highly fancied Elina Svitolina 7-6, 1-6, 6-4. She then powered through her next two opponents in just over an hour on both occasions, beating Kanepi 6-3, 6-3 in the Quarter Final and then 20th seed CoCo Vandeweghe 6-1, 6-2 in the Semi.

The talented Stephens rose as high as World number 11 in October 2013 but after a form slump and then a foot injury which required surgery, saw her ranking fall all the way to 957th in the World just 2 months ago. She has improved her ranking by a mammoth 873 places since August to reach her first Grand Slam final here, which will surely catapault her a long way back towards her career best ranking. She started her US Open campaign with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Roberta Vinci before surviving a tough battle with 11th seed Dominika Cibulkova 6-2, 5-7, 6-3.In Round 3 she made light work of Australian Ashleigh Barty 6-2, 6-4 before knocking off her second top seed, 30th seeded Goerges 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 in Round 4. In the quarter final Stephens beat another top player in 16th seed Sevastova 6-3, 3-6, 7-6. In the Semi Final she then beat 9th seed Venus Williams 6-1, 0-6, 7-5.

Betting: Keys $1.44; Stephens $2.85.
